After Endodontic Therapy

Endodontic treatment has been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed, however, the outer surface is typically sealed with a temporary restoration. Please contact your general dentist to replace the temporary restoration with a permanent restoration and crown. This will help protect your tooth against fracture and decay. A complete report with x-rays will be sent to your dentist. A 6 month follow-up examination may be recommended to evaluate the progress of healing. This appointment will only require a few minutes and no additional fee is charged.

Your tooth is more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You should chew on the other side until your general dentist has placed a core buildup and crown. If your tooth’s strength is severely compromised, your endodontist or restorative dentist may recommend that a post be placed inside the tooth. 

Are There Any Potential Problems After Treatment?

• Mild to moderate pain is common for 48-72 hours following treatment. Most pain can be managed with ibuprofen (Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol). If you had severe pain or swelling prior to treatment at our office, you may be prescribed additional medication for pain management. 
• Post operative infections or flare ups can occur. If this occurs, you will be prescribed an antibiotic. Occasionally, additional evaluation or follow-up visits may be indicated. 
• Persistent numbness or paresthesia. On very rare occasions, you can experience long lasting numbness in the treatment area. This is more common with roots close to large nerve branches. Your endodontist will inform you if there is an increased risk in your case. This condition is nearly always temporary and requires only regular monitoring.
